SP2

Downloaded and installed SP2 but when restarting computer after installation,
computer keeps rebooting. I could get to safe mode but then it would hang.
Tech suggests reformatting - is this the only solution?

SP2 will not install correctly if the computer is infected with spyware or
similar.. If you were to do a clean install of XP, and then apply the SP2
pack directly after, you should have no problems at all..

See Mike Halls reply, ALSO, if this is an older computer, make sure that
any old manufacturer drivers are SP2 compatible. There were some issues
with various "brand name" PC that required upgraded SP2 compatible
drivers be installed first.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you have
solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants of the
Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

You might try booting after disconnecting all peripherals except
keyboard, mouse and monitor

1. Uninstall SP2 via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

2. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis (http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe)
is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware.

**Post your HijackThis log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or
other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**

3. Do not install SP2 until an expert gives your HijackThis log a clean bill
of health.
