SP2 Pop-up blocker

Hi:

Just thought I am getting used to the new security functions of SP2, here is
one that I could not figure out how to do it.

I recently joined a chat room that is using pop-up windows. So I turned
pop-up blocker off for this site, which works well except for one thing -

I can initiate a pop-up message box for private message if I wish to speak
to someone privately. But other person cannot open a pop-up window to talk
to me. My system will still block those pop-up windows that is NOT
initiated by me.

I guess there is some additional settings have to be done but I don't know
how, so can anyone please tell me if you happen to know.

To my best knowledge, this chat room use Java.

Thanks in advance.

Hi:

Thanks for the kind reply.

I did and that's why the pop-up can be activated by me.

But what I don't get it is that if others cannot initiate the pop-up to me.

Thanks :)

Likely not the popup blocker but rather the firewall catching an incoming
un-invited guest. That's what firewalls do. You will probably have to
permit a port that's used by the chat room. I don't know which firewall you
use, so can't tell you how to give the port permission. Of course opening
any port to the outside invites trouble. and is done at your own risk.

Hi:

Thanks for the suggestion and I finally found out the problem.

Well, it is my fault. I did not allow "ALL" pop-up blockers to free the
site.

This is a problem when people are using too many products with identical
features, which in my case, I have Windows, NIS 2004, and MSN toolbar all
come with pop-up blocker.

I guess one of these days, I will select only one to do the work but at this
time, I still don't know which one is the best for the job.

Just to share with you guys just in case you run into similar problems.

That probably needs a specific port enabled in the Exceptions page of
the Firewall. The trouble is to find which - Windows Firewall is not
exactly helpful with log files. A firewall like Zone Alarm would
probably say 'xxxx is trying to act as a server' - and you would say
yes, always

A friend reports BTW that the latest update of MSN Messenger (not
Windows messenger) installed a lot of things (like their home page) -
including killing popups on a site where the IE Popup blocker was
turned off. He had to use System restore to remove the MSN update; I
have not yet had a chance to investigate on a test system
