SP2 on Dell

J

Quote from Dell customer support after I asked them to help with SP2 install
problems. After installing SP2 my network adapters don't work, so I'm left
with no Internet or home network capability. I've been through three
install attempts. Good news! SP2 uninstall works like a charm. Once SP2
is gone, network functions come back.

Here's the quote:

"At this moment WindowsXP Service Pack2 is not tested and validated on Dell
systems and we do not recommend it as of now. I will suggest you to please
unistall Windows SP2"

Funny how this item doesn't show up on Dell's own support site.

I have installed SP2 on three different Dell models without any problems.
I did disable the Dell critical update feature for the duration of the
install.

The Dell US website has the whole first page dedicated to helping you safely
install SP2.

Really happy for you. On my Dell SP2 disables both the Broadcom network
card and the Truemobile wireless card. Absolutely nothing works and the
Dell support offers absolutely no help for the specific problem I'm having.

Didn't really need SP2 anyway. I'm sitting behind two firewalls.

I had no problem with my Dell. But before I installed SP2 I checked for
driver and BIOS updates.

Is this the reply of an MVP (one that replies below kindergarten level)? That site is fairly useless, and you are not really making your attack beased on experience, rather protecting big brother MS.

Yeah, Carey is an MS zealot who is tranced into believing nothing MS makes or has for support services has any faults. I had an issue with SP2, and still haven't gotten it resovled, and the live chat rep was fairly clueless, though I was nice to him, and thankful at the end. He referred me a case number, then I got am email saying since I have not sent in the case number, it is an inactive case. I never was told to email, the rep took care of that. I replied to the email, and the response was they would look into this. That was Sept. 2. The initial chat was Aug. 26.

Note the difference between Aug. 26, and Sept. 2 is 7 days, and the chat rep stated that I would be contacted in 24 hours, I got the "inactive" status email notice (as a receiving any notice at all) 7 days later as the only (24 hour) response! You can even check the "Error.GIF" link, and you'll see it is still on MS's site, since the tech accepted it as a visible example.

Here is the chat, my last name was removed, as well as the tech's name and case number changed for privacy:

I 2nd that. Totally useless. The dude's "solution" was to uninstall SP2
since "it's not tested on Dell."

There are lots of people with Dells, including myself, who have had no
problems at all with SP2.

I just got a Dell Optiplex 280 with SP2 installed and have had all kinds of
performance problems. I'm wiping out the system and reinstalling XP Pro
with SP1 so I can positively rule out SP2 as the culprit.

So I wiped out SP2 on my Dell Optiplex 280 and put XP Pro SP1 with all the
fixes on and my PC now performs just fine. People either seem to have lots
of trouble with SP2 or none at all - no middle of the road. I'm staying
clear of it for now.

Kent, what AV do you have? Just curious.
