I have DL SP2, the 266mb version, and am getting ready to
install. I have been getting a lot of good info from this
discussion. I have the Norton WMI update installed. My
question is: Should I turn off the NAV and Firewall
before installation?

Thanks

Everything I've read recommends you turn off all startup programs, especially
antivirus. To be totally safe though, you're probably better off downloading
the full SP2 install and working offline since you'll be vulnerable the whole
time you're downloading and installing.

Also, This page has a pretty comprehensive checklist to be sure your SP2
installation runs smooth. Some might be overkill but better a little extra
precaution than losing everything.

Thanks Ray. I have already downloaded SP2 the whole
thing. I may go into msconfig and uncheck everything in
startup before I install. I haven't made up my mind yet!
I don't really anticipate any problems though. Thanks
again.

Hi,

I have Norton Internet Security 2004 which includes AV and firewall.
I did not bother changing any msconfig startup stuff.

The only thing I did was disable AV autoprotect during the installation
so that it wouldn't keep virus checking all the files that were being
installed.

It all went through okay, after rebooting the new security centre appeared
and then Norton Internet Security popped up and asked did I want to leave
it as the firewall (which of course I did).

So now the new Security Centre correctly recognises that I have a 3rd party
firewall and 3rd party antivirus setup and installed and uses them. Great no
probs everything runs as normal.

Bye,
Pete

Thanks Pete for your input. I think I will take your
advice. I hate fooling with startup in msconfig. Then I
would have to write down all the ones I had turned off! I
have never had any problems with Norton Virus. I even
left it on when I would DL MS update "critical updates"
but will turn it off on this huge update!
