SP2 made my life hell !!!

Hi,

I am more than a little disappointed with SP2 and microsoft releasing
a product which seems so not ready. I have been bothered by spyware,
adware etc. using XP SP1 and I was looking forward to SP2 with all
it's security features. I downloaded the huge RTM download and
installed it on DELL Inspiron 600m Laptop. Unfortunately, SP2
completely screwed up my system. Some of the problems:

1. Network connections icons are missing in the Control Panel ->
Network connections. My network connectivity is still there but not
reliable. Particularly after a few cycle of suspend and resume, there
is no network connectivity and no matter what I do - it doesn't come
back until after reboot.

2. The Login screen comes up pretty quickly at Boot-up. However, once
I click on my name to log in, it takes a very very long time (5-10
minutes) to show the desktop. Once the desktop is visible, Internet
Explorer seems pretty fine. But this is very very annoying.

3. Windows Update do not work. I get an error when I scan for new
updates.

4. Mcafee virusscan stopped working. I get an error saying "Some
components of Installshield are missing......".

I got so fed up by all these problems that I uninstalled SP2 and
reverted back to SP1. Guess what? All these problems still exist. In
system information, I correctly see that it is SP1 and not SP2 but
these problems still are present. What a mess.

Sort of doing a complete clean install (which unfortunately I can't
because I lost the original DELL CD) - I don't know how to get a
workable system.

Any help to resolve these will be highly appreciated.

thanks,
Osho

Since you are back to SP1 - try doing a system restore to a date a few days
before you installed SP2.

Most people hesitate to install a new SP as soon as it comes out, basically
because the new release still has some bugs.....I'd try a system restore.
