SP2 kills Remote Desktop Connection

Carl Jones

Hi all,

I took the plunge yesterday and installed Service Pack 2 on my
previously very happy SP1 machine.

OOH dear, although the install went smoothly, one of hte first things
I did was to make sure that remote desktop machine to our servers was
still working, alas it's broken.

Whenever I try to connect to any remote desktop (beit on LAN or
internet) it times out. Other machines can remote desktop to my
machine fine but it wont go the other way.

I've tried disabling the firewall but that made no difference.

And... uninstalling SP2 fixed it

So any advice on getting SP2 working as well as remote desktop
connection please?

Thanks

SP3? lol

I'm having similar problems with LAN programs.

Just as you've figured out...

If it worked before sp2...and it works after you uninstall
sp2...well,...

If it looks like a duck...and quacks like a duck...

SP2 has many problems. And advocates of sp2 say to go to the other
software manufacturers to solve the problem. The problem is NOT sp2!
lol

Have a nice one...

My machines are working fine from the remote destop point of view. Basically
all Microsoft applications should run fine with SP2. This is because SP2
avoid letting silly programmers to do some strange things they should
normally never do that some programs are not working anymore.

Did you try to do a "telnet nameofthemachine 3389" ? If you cannot connect
to this port, you'll never be able to make remote destop connections. I
really suspect a firewall problem. Are you really sure you disabled it ? For
the right interface ?

" How do I resolve these issues?

To use these tools to remotely connect a computer running Windows XP
with Windows Firewall enabled, you need to open TCP port 445 in the
firewall on the remote computer. To do this, use the following
procedure:

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and
click Command Prompt.

2. At the command prompt, type netsh firewall set portopening TCP
445 ENABLE and then press ENTER.

Note: Open firewall ports can be a security vulnerability. You
should carefully plan and test any such configuration change before
it is implemented. "

Carl:

I use XP SP2 remote desktop into Win2k3 servers w/o any problems, so it can
work.
Post into one of the MS "remote" NGs for assistance.
