That article is old news. SP2 is still under development and
is undergoing extensive testing. The final version will have
resolved the issues beta testers may have experienced when
testing the various beta versions.

The part of the story that's missing: What was the state of the machine
prior to installing RC2? Had an earlier SP2 beta version been installed at
any point?
<snip> SP2 convienently puts a 'File a Bug' button on your desktop.
Which, unfortunately, didn't work when I tried to report a bug. It said
in effect that they were having so many bug reports that the desktop
icon "bug reporter" no longer was being used and that I needed to go to
a private MS newsgroup to report my bug.
Those people appear to have one specific configuration that causes
trouble (probably through something third party getting itself tangled
into the system) and are turning that into a 'the world will collapse' .
I don't see this reported by all the people joining in the preview
program with ability to post in those news groups. But a major upgrade
like this does need some sense - turn off background intruders like most
Norton products and other similar things, and make sure you do not have
odd third party programs loading at boot until you have the job
finished. And always ensure that critical data is backed up or on
different partitions before doing any major upgrade
