Microsoft Posts SP2 Blocking Tools

Microsoft on Tuesday posted a toolkit that blocks
Windows' Automatic Update from grabbing Windows XP
Service Pack 2, an option enterprises concerned about
lack of testing time had been demanding.

The problem, said Microsoft, is that while it's
recommending all users update to SP2 as soon as possible,
some customers "would like to temporarily block the
delivery of SP2 in order to provide additional time for
validation and testing of the update," Microsoft said in
a statement.

To keep Automatic Update (AU) and/or Windows Update (WU)
from automatically downloading and/or installing SP2, but
still keep those services running so they can grab other
security fixes, Microsoft's assembled a kit of tools and
posted it here.

The disabling functions automatically expire in mid-
December, after which SP2 will be deployed to all Windows
XP machines whether the enterprise likes it or not.

Microsoft also pegged next Monday, August 16, as the SP2
release date to Automatic Update. SP2 will post to
Windows Update later in the month.

No, they haven't but MS MAY not have turned on Automatic Updates for the
first time yet.
Now they say that they think there are still too many
bugs.

Nope, no such spate of bugs is being reported.

Those are requested tools for chicken little enterprise sysadmins who want
to double check the universe before allowing SP2 into their networks. In
some cases it may be prudent to wait.

That isn't the essence of it at all. Corporations who are using
automatic update have asked MS for the chance to have time to test SP2
before it is automatically downloaded to their workstations. This is
common practice in corporations, especially smaller ones. Larger
corporations typically don't use windows update at all. The tool allows
corporations the ability to delay having SP2 automatically installed on
their workstations, giving them a chance to verify that all of their
apps and settings will continue to work under SP2.

No where in that article does Microsoft, or anyone else, say, or
even imply, that "they think there are still too many bugs."
Microsoft has simply provided an additional tool to allow network
administrators of large enterprise networks, who have not yet
adequately tested SP2 for their specific applications and practices,
to control when and how SP2 gets distributed throughout their networks
without interfering with current update schemes.
