XP SP2 RC1

Win XP SP2 Release Candidate 1 should be available this Friday.
Apparently, it is build 2096.
I have been using build 2055 w/o problems.

BTW, it is still beta s/w, so use at your own risk.

BTW2, hopefully, it will have the outbound firewall control that I have yet
to see. I still use ZA free with build 2055.

"Microsoft also will deliver on a promise made earlier this week to make the
beta available to a broader set of beta testers as part of the newly dubbed
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Technical Preview Program. As part of the program,
Windows XP SP2 RC1 is scheduled be available for download through a new
TechNet portal at http://www.microsoft.com/sp2preview as of Friday,

Mark:

Unfortunately, my suspicions are being confirmed. Apparently, there is no
outbound firewall control in XP SP2.
"Windows Firewall will automatically allow all outbound connections,
regardless of the program and the user context"
I thought BGates stated there would be outbound control?

Re: firewall exceptions list:
It will be interesting to see what the hackers do with this:
"An application can be placed on the Windows Firewall exceptions list in
three ways.
First, it can be added programmatically by the application. It is
recommended that independent software vendors (ISVs) place their application
on the Windows Firewall exceptions list during installation."

Summary:
Apparently, SP2's firewall is still only for inbound control; it has nothing
for outbound control

So is that the reason why you get a (free for 1yr)third party
AV/Firewall product when you request the security update CD (Feb 04)
from Microsoft?

Hi

No. For one thing, SP2 isn't released yet, and SP2 is only for
Windows XP, while the security update CD also supports Windows Me,
Windows 2000, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE),
where no firewall is included as part of the OS.
