XP SP2 compatibility with Autodesk Buzzsaw

M

Mike Tom

Hi,

When I type in a URL to reach an Autodesk Buzzsaw site
(see below for example), I usually get to a login prompt.
After installing SP2 beta (build 2055) for XP Pro, I would
instead see a File Download window prompting me to open or
save a file. On a later Release Candidate (build 2096) of
SP2, the problem went away (good). We at Autodesk would
like to know whether or not this compatibility problem
will occur when SP2 is officially released.

On the earlier beta version, this behavior could be
avoided by going to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_MIME_HANDLING and
setting DWORD iexplore.exe from 1 to 0.
(FeatureControl\FEATURE_MIME_HANDLING\iexplore.exe had to
be manually added under Main).

To reproduce the behavior, you will need Win XP Pro with
Service Pack 2 beta - build 2055. Launch Internet Explorer
and attempt to log on to this Autodesk Buzzsaw test site:

URL: https://folders.buzzsaw.com/client/mstestsite/

After Autodesk Buzzsaw is automatically downloaded,
install the application. From there you should be able to
see the File Download prompt.

Thanks,
Mike Tom
Autodesk Buzzsaw QA.

LOL! Why do you think MS would know that? Isn't that something your
department should be testing when SP2 is released?

Hey Kurt,
After re-reading my post, I can see why you misunderstood
what I was asking. My fault for not communicating the
message well. I don't mean to ask MS if there will be a
compatibiltiy issue after this release comes out. I'm
telling MS that one beta version had this particular issue
and one did not -- and I am asking if the official version
will have it or not.

I admit that I asked my question in an unclear way in the
beginning. After I corrected it people are still nit
picking at it. I guess some people have nothing better to
do but hide behind a computer try to be funny. Oh well, it
is pretty funny I guess.

My guess is that they fixed the problem in the previous beta with the
subsequent one, and since adding a simple registry edit fixed it, that it
won't be part of SP2 when it's released. MS doesn't officially support
these newsgroups, so asking MS for a direct reply is an exercise in
futility. You will see MS employees respond here occasionally, but they do
that to get suck up points, and they all use a disclaimer saying that what
they say can't be held against MS.

You, at Autodesk, should lookup and learn what BETA means.

Thank you for that reply. Ironically, I was referred to
this newsgroup by an MS tech support rep that said MS
techs usually reply here. It does appear that they had
corrected this behavior by the later version, but I wanted
to see if I could could confirm with them that it wasn't
going to come back in the shipped SP2. If that happened
for any reason, it would have been a surprise for our
customers that could have possibly been avoided.
Thanks again, I think the MS tech meant to give me the
link for the MSDN managed newsgroup.

This is a peer support group. There are a few MS folks who do
read/respond on occasion, but 99% of the help here comes from
elsewhere.

As for getting SP2 answers here, you got lied to. There are official
SP2 newsgroups; if you can't access them then you aren't an official
BETA tester and as such, you are pretty much on your own. If you are
an official tester and still can't access, MS needs to fix this for
you.

XP SP2 is now in a public preview stage. Anybody, not just official beta
testers, can download the latest version. You are correct about there being
specific newsgroups for SP2, but, inevitably you will get some who post
these questions to the general XP groups.
