SP2 install issues

I installed SP2 on 3 XP machines at home just fine.
However, installing on two machines at work gets the same
issues:

When the machine is logged in a yellow shield appears in
the tool tray and every few minutes prompts you to reboot
saying you have not restarted since you last installed
updates. Rebooting does not clear this.

If the PC is left at the logon screen it will reboot
automatically every few minutes and enter the following
entry in the syslog:
The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of ITG-
HELPDESK for the following reason: No title for this
reason could be found
Minor Reason: 0x2
Shutdown Type: reboot

Both machines exhibit these. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled SP2 many time. I have called the SP2 hotline
who advised to uninstall/reinstall and disable AV which I
have also done. I have stopped all processes before
running the install.

Has anyone seen this?

Unfortunately, I have seen the exact same problem. It doesn't happen
to all the machines I've tested XP_SP2 on, but it has happened enough
that we cannot deploy SP2 on the 500 machines at the office. I wish we
could find someone at Microsoft who would tell us how to correct this
problem.
