SP2 install failed, why?

Even though I'm still not convinced of the value, after much study and prep I
decided to install SP2. I followed all suggestions for a successful install.
Downloaded all current updates to SP1, disabled McAfee virus and firewall,
and ZeroSpyware spyware programs even removed them from startup after full
clean scans, removed all virtual drives i.e. Game Drive, I am the
administrator.
I used the install disc and after indicating a successful install I
restarted the system.
I then got the "Sorry Windows was unable to start" screen. I let it try to
restart after count down but just got the same screen. I then started in
safe mode and was able to access Windows. I removed SP2 and restored to
SP1. I then tried to update to SP2 via Windows update site with the same
results. What am I missing?
I am running SATA Raid 0, and have a gig of memory even though Msinfo32
shows only 512 MB, the system is 2 year old assembled by ABS Computers.
Here is my system info as per, Msinfo32:

Thanks but followed every one of those tips even disconnected all periperals.
I did not update BIOS but was told by manufacturer that it would not be

Ok there was a problem with some Prescott processors which needed a bios
update. Haven't heard of a similar issue with yours.

1. Uninstall SP2 via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

2. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum.

Check for Hijackware

http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

When all else fails, HijackThis (http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip)
is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware.

**Post your HijackThis log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or
other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**

3. Do not install SP2 until an expert gives your HijackThis log a clean bill
of health.

I know anothing about the particular product you use, but note that Eric
Howes, who has done extensive testing on Anti-Spyware products states

"No single anti-spyware scanner removes everything. Even the best-performing
anti-spyware scanner in these tests missed fully one quarter of the

Be very careful. Although a BIOS upgrade normally goes well, it is not
without danger. If something goes wrong while the upgrade is an progress
(for example, a lapse in power) you can be left with no BIOS at all, and an
unbootable computer. I think many BIOS upgrades are done when they shouldn't
be.

Ken
I agree, my moto is if it's not broke don't fix it. One reason I still
don't have SP2 on my system. The BIOS upgrade is very straight forward
through my BIOS supplier they have something called an @BIOS utility that
makes it close to fail proof, and my GIGABYTE mother board has dual BIOS
technology for BIOS backup.
I do run other spyware programs from time to time i.e. Adaware etc. but they
never find anything in part because ZeroSpyware is so good. I have a very
clean well protected fast running system that shows no signs of infection.
That is why I am perplexed over PS2's failure to load. I am tempted to
ignore it and wait for Longhorns release. But I now consider it a challenge
to get that SP2 thing buzzing.

"critical" files and Registry entries"

See http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

The same goes for anti-virus/anti-trojan apps. YET again, best bet is
NOT install Spyware in the first place. Most apps w/spyware tell you in
advance that they will install "spyware", but most users NEVER read,
they just click and go.

I agree, my moto is if it's not broke don't fix it. One reason I still
don't have SP2 on my system. The BIOS upgrade is very straight forward

If you have a new MS XP2 CD that of course comes w/SP2, your pc will
work very well with a fresh install. In fact, my main beta tester, ie my
son who can screw up anything, has not screwed up a fresh install of XP2
yet :)

Like any previous MS-OS, their second release is usually quite nice.

eg.

dos 6.22
win95B
win98SE
XP2

I don't think so at all. I doubt if there is *any* anti-virus application
which does anywhere near as badly as catching only 75% of the
viruses/trojans.

Despite the perverse way you normally tell posters here this, I completely
agree. The point, which I think you never make clearly, is that prevention
is much better than cure.

Most apps w/spyware tell you
in advance that they will install "spyware", but most users NEVER
read, they just click and go.

True, but lots of malware doesn't tell you they are going to install
themselves. You need to not install malware by knowing enouugh to be
cognizant of the threats, and by running appropriate software to prevent
installation, not by trying to fix the problem after the fact.

Thanks for the old tune on Spyware, virus, trojans blahh blahh blahh.
My computer is way more junk free than this thread.
I do appreciate your response but not one person here has posted anything
in the least bit helpful. I'm not even sure any of you read my original post?
shumandu-you don't

If your computer is "junk free", then either you have a hardware
incompatibility, you missed something or something probably to remain
unknown happened.
No one may never know and that may be why you have not been given a specific
answer.

Find another hard drive and clean install Windows followed by SP-2.
If you have the same problem, you have a hardware problem.
If there is no problem, you have a software issue with your original
installation.
More than likely there is an unknown problem with your computer.

There are a plethora of hardware and software issues that could be
causing this behavior. However I would slipstream the __correct__
copy of XP to SP2, then do a repair (in place upgrade).

Seems you are new to USEnet. IT's a free thing. Often a post is just a
starting point for other posts which may, or may not be related to your
inquiry. Perfectly natural.

I know spyware is an issue but people tend to blame it for eveything that
goes wrong on an OS and thier divorces and WMD's too. I have scanned with
four different spyware tools. I do not have spyware on my system, if I do
it's hidden so well it deserves to stay there. What other possible issues
can cause the "Sorry for the inconvienience but Windows can not start because
this upgrade sucks" message.
Onward through the fog
