SP2 Install Error

Lanny Bender

I've downloaded all updates that Microsoft has offered, except for SP2.

Here's an explanation of my troubles step-by-step.

1. I wanted to create a Slipstream CD for XP Pro and SP2; but somehow it
wouldn't let me unless I installed SP2 first. So I tried. After an
interminable time, I got a blue screen with these words in white:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: win32k.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NOPAGED_AREA.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, (it was the
1st time) restart your computer. If this screen appears again, (the screen
didn't appear again) follow these steps:

- Check to make sure any hardware or software is properly installed. If
this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for
any window updates you might need.

- If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you
need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your
computer, press F8 to select Advanced starting options, and then select safe
mode.

Technical information:

STOP: 0x00000050 (0xFDDB0103, 0x00000000, 0xBFB169CC, 0x00000000)

win32k.sys - Address BF8169CC bas at BF800000, Datestamp 4341dcff

Beginning dump of physical memory.

Physical memory dump complete.

Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further
assistance."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------

2. When I restarted my computer, I got this message:

" Setup was interrupted. Restoring prior configuration........."

3. Then I got this in a 'Windows XP' popup screen:

"The Windows Service Pack installation did not complete. This system is in
an unstable state. Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs and choose
to uninstall the Windows Service Pack, or contact your system
administrator."

4. Then I got this popup message:

"Windows cannot find

p%2b17&State=0&LCID=1033&OS=5.1.2600.2.00010100.2.0'. Make sure you typed
the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the
start button, and then click search."

Since I hadn't typed the name in the first place, I ignored the advice to
search for the file.

5. I tried to remove SP2 from the 'Add and Remove' feature and got several
warnings that some software & hardware wouldn't work. Then I got an error
Service Pack 2 error that said: "The system cannot find the file." This was
followed by another SP2 error message that said: "Service Pack 2 was not
uninstalled."

6. Now I'm getting an update download that says:

"This update detects if SP2 is properly installed on your computer. If not,
this update will instruct you to uninstall SP2. After uninstalling SP2, you
should reinstall it. Failed installations of SP2 can result in system
instability and in error during installation of other updates. You will be
offered this update repeatedly until the failed SP2 is uninstalled. More
information can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888162."

7. Well I tired to uninstall using KB888162, and got the same error messages
I got in step 6.

8. Then I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888162, and followed the
partial instructions there. Since I didn't have to uninstall KB834707 (it
was removed previously as part of a dust bunny removal process), I proceeded
to step 8. When I followed those instructions, I got the same results that
I got in step 5, above.

PLEASE HELP!

I don't understand this. You don't need SP2 installed to create a
slipstreamed SP2 CD. Not sure how you were trying to do this but here are
some links for how. Autostreamer makes it easier.

Rock,
Thank you for the Autostream info. I'll try this, after I get my SP2
Install Error corrected.

I followed the instructions in KB876355. The Recovery Console routine
worked just like it said it would.

When I restarted my PC and I tried to RUN the XP SP2 Removal Wizard, my
computer went high and dry. That is to say after I had waited 2½
hours for the Removal process to complete (Inspecting Current
Configuration was highlighted the whole time), I canceled the process.

I opened "spuninst.log"; and in the last few lines I read that
'Enumerating Devices of GUID {..." had failed several times with this
error code "0xd." Right before I canceled, the last line of the
Removal process read: "8568.953: CreateProgressWizardDoUninstall:
Uninstall Failure 0x4c7" The last 3 lines were my cancel operation.

Am I doing something wrong? Should I have waited longer for the
Removal Wizard to finish?

Lanny, I don't know what to tell you at this point. You could try it again
to see if waiting longer helps, but I don't think it will.

Rock,
Do you know what "Uninstall Failure 0x4c7" means?
