SP2 - IE - links

I've updated several XP computers to SP2 now, but with one of my own, I'm
having a problem with opening links from my desktop. Also if I try to run
Windows Update from the classic start menu. When I click on the link, the
hourglass shows for a bit, then stops, but IE doesn't come up. If I then
open IE directly, two instances come up, one with my chosen home page and
the other one (on top) with the link I had previously selected. I have
uninstalled all other browsers and ran REGSVR32 /i SHDOCVW.DLL. Nothing
seems to help. Any ideas?

I've just noticed that if I check task manager when the first screen
doesn't come up, I have a process called "UEXPLORE.EXE" running. I Googled
for that and got no hits. Don't know if that means anything or not.

1. You click on a hyperlink in and an IE window doesn't even open:

Check your system for "hijackware":

Help with Hijackware

http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.winfavorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup > More options > Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.

3. Check in at Windows Update.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

OK, thanks. I checked both sites. I registered all the DLL's and that
took care of the desktop links. However the Windows Update from the
classic start menu still doesn't work.
On the first link it had me check the open properties for URL:Hypertext
Transfer Protocol. Everything was right there except that
"D:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome %1 didn't have
the "-nohome" in it. I added it but it made no difference.
I notice the properties for the windows update button in the start menu
is %SystemRoot%\system32\wupdmgr.exe
But it's the same on another machine that works, so it must be right.
I guess I can live with that little imperfection... there's a link to the
update site in IE itself under Tools.

Robear,

The list under KB831429 Method 1 for Windows 2000 is better
as an IE Repair substitute because it gives them all the possible
/i switches to use too. (I still haven't tested whether sfc /scannow
actually does any re-registration at all under XP but I'm very dubious.)

The regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll might even make the old ielnk page
redundant.

Besides, I find it is an easier number to remember than that 28...
(Think 8pi with a 2 in place of 15. <g>)
