SP2 from MSDN?

I see Windows XP SP2 listed on the MSDN downloads site. Is this the
official release?

I d/l it, installed it. I thought it was supposed to be build 2180, but
when I do a Winver I get the following:

Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158: Service Pack 2 which sounds like build
2158.

However, if I look at the AUTORUN.DLL file on the CD I burned I see
5.1.2600.2180 as the version of that file.

So is this the correct official release?

Yes

that shows it's the sp2 rtm (ppl in the wild don't care about build
numbers..)

a) Noticed it no longer says XP Professional on booting (in the splash
screen) but XP. Still says Pro on the Start menu.

b) Firewall on by default (we all knew that), I had to turn it off to use
the VPN to work (since the old Firewall was off by default not sure if this
is new behavior).

c) Upon boot, after logging in, takes quite a while before the first app
will launch. Somewhere between 20-30 seconds. Did a defrag (incl.
boot-time defrag) with Diskeeper to get it from 40 seconds to this length of
time.

Funny MS own website states the FTP and GOPHER are no longer supported in
SP2.

Frankly, it was about time that general support for Gopher was put to bed.
Those who still want to use it for a specialist application can use their
own "3rd party" tools for doing so (and get better service from doing so).

As for FTP, again, if Microsoft are choosing to discontinue their own FTP
command line app then this again is probably a good thing for the majority
of people who never use it (though I note that it still seems to be
installed and working on my machine here which is running XP SP2 RTM). But
in any case, thats still a long way from "FTP... It will not ever work
again". For a start, it works just fine via my browser, my 3rd party FTP app
(filezilla), and as I said, the command line appears to be working fine here
too.

Have you tried ftp yet? It will not ever work again.

Works great for me. You have something setup wrong.

Care to share that link? ftp.exe in C:\windows\system has a 4 Aug
2004 file date with a version of 5.1.2600.2180 which is XP SP2. I
believe you read the release incorrectly.

People in the wild who don't care about build numbers will end up
downloading from some unknown site and getting 2179 or 2162 or earlier
just repackaged as XPSP2.exe or something stupid like that. Build
numbers are absolutely critical. Be sure you have 2180 and that you
get it from a MS-sanctioned DL site or order the CD from MS.

I bet M$ and the software community at large would love to figure out how
to get rid of Usenet newsgroup support on the Internet in favor of website
forums? Getting rid of FTP might be a tiny first step in that direction.
The world's most popular by far OS that is far more then an OS has done so
much to steer so many people and could do so much more in the future.

I'll be worn out and long gone before this Internet development is over but
the really interesting question is, is this world a better place for life
and kids or just a bigger playpen for the rich and famous minority that we
elect, support, and cater to?

Nothing can be made complete monkey proof, can it?

When ppl start downloading stuff randomly from random site and install it,
there is little that can help. Not even a official RTM of SP2. If will make
any mistake they can in future (like disabling firewall -- some guy told me
it speeds up my Download speed, my ping time, my upload speed/// same for AV
programs.... etc etc).

Ppl that *want* to know if the realle have the official RTM should dl it via
windows update only. But yeah, patience 1.0 hasn't RTM'ed yet.............

It's like thinking a tiger i just a big friendly cat... ;-)

Have a nice day!

Guys, the question was about the MSDN SUBSCRIBER site. Not a random site.
You should read more carefully. Subject line, eh?

That link refers to FTP and gopher usage within Windows Installer 3.0:
"As a result, Windows Installer 3.0 no longer supports the FTP and GOPHER
protocols." FTP (and I assume gopher) still work fine under SP2.

Plz read the thread again, and notice the topic was changed a bit later on.
You should read more carefully indeed.....

If they do, then I for one will stop posting. So go find someone else to
lecture.
Getting rid of FTP might be a tiny first step in
that direction.

How so? I don't believe Usenet runs on FTP?
