SP2 fried my pooter

Well, not totally, only my graphics. AFAIKT, I'm
operating with 2 bit color resolution even though
system claims 4.

MB = AOpen MX3W-E2L
Chipset = i810E2
Graphics controller = 82810E DC-133

Here's the story. I wanted to upgrade to AVG 8 and
sys requirement is XP SP2, so I had to upgrade to
SP2 first.

After the upgrade, graphic were toasted, but rolling back
the video drivers seemed to fix the problem. Or so I thought.
Soon discovered that everytime I'd boot, new hardware
was detected and I had to guide it to the drivers it wanted.
next boot, same procedure.

So I ran AVG 8, and it did find some stuff that the older version
of AVG had been missing. However, the video problems
were already happening after my upgrade to SP2 + AVG,
but before the AVG 8 virus scan, so I don't think the virus
scan has anything to do with the problem.

Well, up until now, I at least had some system restore points
that I could have fallen back on, but I just used the msconfig utility
for selective startup and found that system restore somehow
got turned off and all of my restore points are gone.

So now, I have no choice but to solve the problem and fix it.

FWIW, now as I'm posting this everything looks good.
How did I get here? After 3 days of reading everything I could
find at Intel and Microsoft website, I installed the latest
Intel inf installation utility, then uninstalled the current video drivers,
then removed the graphics controller from device manager,
then rebooted.

System comes up, re-detects hardware then prompts for drivers.
Here's where it gets weird. If I direct it to to a folder with the
latest Intel video drivers in it, install completes and I'm locked
into 2 bit color depth mode. If however, I let it search for drivers,
it seems to find some somewhere and installs most of them
then prompts me for some that it can't find. So I point it to
the latest driver folder where it seems to find the remainder
of the drivers it needs. Then the sytems comes up to where I am
now with everything working beautifully in all graphic modes.

However !!!! Upon rebooting, all will be lost and I'll be back to
2 bit mode.

Worst of it is, I really would like to learn everything there is to know
about how XP handles drivers, but we just got whacked by
hurricane Gustav down here and huricane Ike is on the way, so
I've used up my 3 day window to try to edjamacate myself
for now.

So, should I try to fix?
Or should I re-install (repair) XP and re-install SP2

FWIW, when I did the upgrade to SP2, I did it unattended.
Might it have asked for some drivers or something I didn't
supply it while I was out of the room?

I've reached the conclusion that it's time to defer to the experts.
I do DSP assembly, but XP ain't my cup of tea.
Any help truly appreciated.

Thanks
Dave

Well, I decided to uninstall SP2 like the guy in the
cnet forum did and just like him, after the uninstall
of SP2, installing the Intel i82810E worked the first time
I tried it and I have all video resolution modes working again.

I got a bit of a laugh when SP2 uninstalled. It listed all my
video drivers and warned me that after the uninstall, they
might not work properly :)

I had actually already ordered the SP3 CD, so I guess
I'll try to see if SP3 will toast my graphics like SP2
did when the CD arrives. Hopefully not.

It's a shame because I was happy with AVG 8 and
it's new feature where it marks your Yahoo or Google
search results with status about whether links in the
search results point to malicious sites or not.

Too bad AVG has discontinued support for XP unless you
have upgraded to SP2. I guess I'll just have to find
another antivirus app for now.

Hopefully someone will solve the SP2 with Intel i82810
incompatibility issue soon.

Ciao for now

After I uninstalled SP2, I was pleased to find that
most features in AVG 8 seem to be working with
the exception of it's "resident shield" function, which
reports "driver not found"

I can probably live without that since I always manually
scan any files I download anyway.

The link scanner that works in conjunction with Yahoo
and Google still works, so I'm happy as a lark :)

Just thought I'd re-post with a title containing better
key words soze anyone searching this problem
will stand a better chance of finding this thread

Thanks, but,,,,
I had already found that article and tried it.
In fact I tried it with 4 different releases of drivers
from Intel.

Now that all is working again with SP2 uninstalled,
just out of curiosity, I'm going to try them all again.
But first, some shut-eye. It's 9:am and been up all night.

Thanks again
