SP2 Firewall Disabled Error

J

Jeff Lipeles

I disabled the MS firewall after installing SP2 and when
it boots it pops up something that says I may be at risk
because the firewall is up. Fine. I click on
Recommendations and there is a check box that says it will
leave me alone because I have an undetectable (by Windows)
firewall. I click this. All is well... until I boot up the
computer again. Then it pops up this message again and the
check box I clicked above is no longer clicked. It isn't
saving that setting. Anything I can do about this? Where
on the MS site can I report the bug to MS?

Thanks!

try launching the security center, either from a tray icon or from
accessories\system tools
click the link on the left side at the bottom for changing the way security
center alerts, then uncheck the firewall box.

Clicking on the Recommendations button and then the
checkbox for "I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor
myself" changes the registry key:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center
FirewallOverride

to have a value of 1.

Manually changing this registry setting may also resolve
your issue.

If you have CleanSweep or other registry monitoring
utility, maybe it is resetting your registry, thus
negating your settings?

CAUTION: Of note is that on some systems, changing the
registry keys for the Security Center can corrupt the
Network Connection settings, thus hosing My Network
Places. I have observed this behavior when manually
flagging the FirewallDisableNotify key on a Dell Optiplex
GX270.
