Hi,
I have Windows XP with SP2 integrated, problem is that I
cannot load my Epson C44UX driver & my Trust flat scan
19200 usb driver. They will not load correctly, any
ideas? I was thinking of trying to take SP2 off for now
till Microsoft get around to ironing these problems out.

Epson's website states that they will have a new driver
available for 1 Dec 04!

Thanks
Jason

Get the XP driver for that Epson C44UX from Epson's site
if they have one.

SP2 is sound.....if you have done a clean install the
issue is with the drivers you are trying to install not
with the service pack.....it is not MS responsibility for
these drivers to work with sp2 it is the hardware vendors.

Which is why we have chaos. MS released the update, not the hardware
vendors. MS should have made sure all manufacturers have the time to release
updated drivers, yes? As it says below, Epson won't have the drivers until 1
Dec 04. Soooooooo, being as Epson isn't some little fly-by-night company, MS
obviously didn't give them enough time to figure out a driver that will work
with the new code. Ergo, MS has to share in the responsibility of allowing
people to use their computers instead of searching high and low for drivers,
updates and whatnot.

When you upgrade your OS its your hardware makers responsibility to make
drivers available for it. This is NOT a Microsoft problem.

The manufacturers had many months as well as access the SP-2 Betas.
If Microsoft waited for the manufacturers, SP-2 would never be
released since manufacturers will choose not to make drivers for some
of the older hardware.
The manufacturers that cared to already have the drivers available.

Are you suggesting an update many demanded and many also needed be
delayed so manufacturers beyond Microsoft's control take more time
than necessary to do what could have been done sooner?
It seems many manufacturers wait for the final release possibly to
reduce the need to start over with a newer driver.
Delaying the release of a Service Pack will also delay the work on
some of the drivers.

Sounds like a no win situation, especially for my poor Epson printer -- and
my pocketbook for a new one.

Alias, back to looking for drivers :-)

I know of a few who may not agree with you. MS changed the XP operating
system so that it is incompatible with equipment or software that worked with
SP1...shouldn't MS share a tiny bit of responsibility?

I specifically asked Gigabyte about a problem with SP2 that wasn't in SP1;
they said it's a Microsoft problem because it "worked" with SP1. And, I
asked the manufacturer of a digital security system about a problem with
SP2 (SP2 crashed the program) that wasn't there with SP1, and they replied
"then you'll have to use SP1". A friend said Earthlink advised him not to install
SP2 because it would cause him a problem. Now don't shoot the messenger,
I'm just stating facts. ;-)

If it is a driver issue, it is clearly a hardware manufacturer issue
since Microsoft is not in the driver business for 3rd party hardware.
If the manufacturer chooses not to make necessary updates for the
hardware, you have a few choices.
Do not update
Buy newer hardware.
Contact the manufacturer and ask for support for the hardware, this
can be successful if enough people make contact.

In the example you mentioned, it sounds like Gigabyte has chosen not
to support the update and the only option they can give is do not
update.

Similar for the security system.
Perhaps their code was poorly written based partly on one or more of
Windows XP weaknesses fixed by SP-2.
Consider changing to a company that believes in safe computing.

For me, its a treat when an OS upgrade helps you with drivers. For me,
one of the coolest things re: XP was when folks put in on it had the
drivers for all those winmodems which were often hard to find and/or
install. It was a nice touch and saved lots of time/energy.

Now there is an idea!
But that is probably more sweeping change than you intended.

Manufacturers knew it was coming. They had full access to the RC1
preview back in March. So there is no excuse for their not checking out
at that time, and having four months to get any needed work done. There
*may* be exceptions - I have a device that worked in RC1 but not RC2 or
RTM, but they should be rare
