SP2 downloads stop midway

I have tried several times to download SP2 directly from
the Internet and it always stops after it is half way
(about the point when it is backing up the Registry).
I requested the CD from MS and I attempted to download it
with everything closed, including my ADSL connection and
disabling of my Norton anti-virus, and it stops at the
same point. The PC becomes very sluggish and it takes
nearly 5 minutes to shut down.
I have 256MB Ram memory, 1.5GHz, available 18GB space.
