SP2 Download Complete or Not Complete

I downloaded SP2 via dial-up. Took a whole ten (10) yes,
count 'em ten hours. My ISP didn't kick me off!
However, after verifying the download, install said it
completed, and when it went to update the registry, it it
locked up. Now I am unable to remove SP2 through my
Administrator account. I've lost access to Control
Panel. I received my copy of SP2 on CD from Microsoft,
very prompt I might add. Can I load SP2 on top of
itself, or do I start from scratch?
I am not a very happy camper. I have on-line courses to
complete. And yes, I had all the current security
updates from Microsoft prior to the download.

The current security updates are not relevant to a successful SP-2
installation.
If they are not in, an Automatic Update will take longer, that is all.

Install SP-2 from CD is unlikely to solve the problem.

Try System Restore to Date/Time before issue started.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
You may have to do this in Safe Mode:
Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select Safe Mode at the menu.

Follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist when you are ready to
install SP-2:

Amazing, Microsoft's own "Try First..." instructions
don't work. Though system restore does. Was hoping to
avoid that. Thanx for the info.

You can't load the CD version on top of the one that failed. You'll
need to do a repair install first:

Go here and follow his directions to the letter:

After the repair install, DISCONNECT the computer from the internet
and install SP2.
