SP3 and SP2

I'm about to clean down my PC and reinstall XP Home from scratch.
I have SP2 on CD and will soon also download and save SP3.

Question: if applying SP3 do I also need to install SP2 beforehand, or
is SP3 cumulative?

Thanks

SP3 includes all the SP2 security updates.
So you have two choices:
1) Install using your Windows XP SP2 CD and then install
SP3 using the SP3 file you downloaded, which is preferable
than using Windows Updates to install SP3

2) Create a "Slipstreamed" Windows XP SP3 CD and use
that CD to install Windows. When the installation is finished
you will already beat SP3. The one downside with this method
is that you can't uninstall SP3. The big upside is the slipstreamed
CD is now your "Windows CD" and can be used to perform
a "Repair Install" properly.

Either way you choose to go, the install will not include any
specific drivers for your motherboard, audio, video, network, etc.
Those you will need to download from your PC manufacture's
or motherboard's web site.

How to do a Clean Install of Windows XP
Start by changing the BIOS setting to Boot from CD drive first.
Then see below:

If you choose to create a "Slipstreamed CD" see below.
Create a "Slipstreamed" version of XP that incorporates SP3
AutoStreamer, it's easy to use and for the most part self explanatory.
After you create the CD then do a "Clean Install", see the last part
of my reply.

Yes but I would recommend using NLite to make yourself an SP3
Slipstreamed CD so that when you reinstall from scratch, you are
already at SP3 level. Much faster and much less time consuming.

Minimum to install SP3 in an XP environment is SP1A installed. In a
nutshell, SP1A has VM (virtual machine) disabled vs SP1 Irregardless, SP3
is cumulative regarding XP itself. IE and media player are not part of that
picture.. Even though they came with XP originally installed. Security
updates for these are separate installations NOT part of SP3.

Just so that I am absolutely sure I'm on the right track . . .

Your option 1 sounds as if it applies in my case, that is, I'm wiping
everything from my hard disk and starting from scratch from my
original XP Home SP2 CD, then installing SP3.

I'm not sure if it will be best to install all the motherboard drivers
immediately after the SP2 and before the SP3 installation, or after
the SP3 installation as well - any suggestions?

Thanks.

Install the motherboard drivers
"immediately after the SP2 and before the SP3 installation"

Check the MB maker's web site to see if the drivers you
have are the latest versions available.
