SP2/SP3 Query

I am about to do a clean reinstall of XPpro.

Do I still need to install SP2 before SP3, or does SP3 include all the
SP2 fixes?

From what I have gathered SP3 includes all the SP2 fixes ut I just
want to be sure!

Thanks!

What you'll want to do is make a slipstream SP3 CD using nlite. This
way, when you install XP from scratch, you will be at SP3 level after
it is installed.

SP3 includes Windows Updates released since SP2 and around 1000 other
updates not released via Windows Update. Well worth it.

You need to have a previous SP installed, but either SP1 or SP2 will
do.

Will the clean install leave you with WinXP Gold or WinXP SP1(a)?

If the former, you'll need to install SP2 before installing SP3. If the
latter, you can skip SP2 and install SP3.

Many thanks for all your replies!

I have reinstalled my (very old) version of XPpro several times and
each time updated it with SP2 - can I assume that my original XPpro cd
already had SP1 included - there is no indication of it on the cd - or
would SP2 install without SP1?

Thanks!

Yes, SP2 will install without SP1

I am no further forward. To summarise -

a) If my XPpro cd has SP1 included then I can go straight to SP3
or
b) If my XPpro cd not not include SP1 then I must install SP2 then SP3

So how do I determine if my XPpro cd has SP1? There is no indication
on the cd.

Thanks!

You got it.
So how do I determine if my XPpro cd has SP1? There is no indication
on the cd.

Normally if SP level isn't on the setup media, it's the original release
(without SP). If you've already installed it, right click My Computer then
click Properties. If you don't see Service Pack __ in the General tab,
there's no SP.

After reinstalling WinXP, right-click on My Computer | Properties | General
tab will tell you what you just installed. Proceed accordingly.

DO NOT under any circumstances INSTALL WinXP SP3 without first checking
and making certain that all of your computer's components are SP3
certified.

Particularly, DO NOT INSTALL if you have any Intel components as they are
choosing NOT to get their drivers SP3 certified.

And, last but not least, determining whether or not your motherboard or
network adapter drivers are SP3 compliant is nearly impossible.

Installing or using already installed non-compliant drivers will make
certain catastrophic computer failure.

This is nonsense. SP3 has been out for quite a long time and I've installed
it on hundreds of machines with Intel boards.

Certainly one should always take proper precautions before installing any
service pack, but your "sky is falling" warning is way over the top. If you
had issues and want help with them, please do post back with full details
and someone will try to assist you.

Many have already installed KB960714 including me.
Who do you think you're trying to impress with you name calling

It's certainly nonsense. I haven't done the hundreds of machines you
have, but I've done a bunch and haven't had any problems either.

Dear Mutton Head -

Such intelligence!
Sorry but you're wrong. I 've always loved the two little orphans underneath
the robes of the Ghost of Christmas Present - Want and Ignorance

But I'll give you the opportunity to absolve your arrogance ...

Jumping from "ignorance" to "arrogance": Ducky. Just plain ducky.
by just giving me the website link from Intel where they cite "SP3 certified"
on one of their network adapters.

D-Link has already acknowledged that you should use caution with their
network ethernet cards.

This would be the same D-Link which has botched their DIR-655 firmware
upgrade? Okay.
You see, oatmeal-for-brains, the problem doesn't surface until WU gives you
KB960714.

What problem would that be? I've got Intel network adapters, and I've got
'KB960714': And I don't have any problems.
Next time why don't you back up your claims with statements from
manufacturers and/or developers.

Stay Tuned!

You popped into these groups with nothing but BS about SP3. Google Groups
doesn't show much of a posting history, other than your BS SP3 warnings; and
a couple of 'rec.nude' group posts. How much faith should anybody put into
the ravings of a know-nothing nudist?
