SP2 Automatic updates

After installing SP2 to MS Windows XP Pro it came up with
Windows update turned off. I had trouble updating prior to
to SP2 but at least it looked like it was turned on. the
window uder SYSTEM is grayed out so I can't manually turn
it on.

When you have this issue, are you checking from an administrator or limited
account? If limited, that's likely the issue.

Check at Control Panel - Admin Tools - Services for Automatic Update.
D-click it, make sure Startup type is Automatic, and click Apply. Click
Start, and hope the service starts.

Then set up the Updates at the new Control Panel - Automatic Updates
