How to See and Stop Updates????

Hello,
I posted these questions on the Windows Update list a number of times and
never got a response. As some here already know, on Oct 11 Microsoft
installed SP2 onto my system w/o my knowledge or consent (and not just my
system) even though I had and have Auto Updates turned off. Now the Updates
control window is changed to Allow Auto Updates, completely grayed out and
therefore frozen on Allow Auto Updates. So I keep getting an Updates Ready -
need to Restart message window because the updates even install themselves
whether or not I want them to!

A few questions:
1) How can I see what updates have been downloaded?
2) I've allowed Norton Antivirus to automatically update, will this trigger
the update window?
3) Dell and other diagnostic websites claim that I have Automatic Updates
turned off - even though it's frozen On via the Update control window being
grayed out
4) How can I turn off Auto Updates completely? I visit the update site
frequently and like to see the proposed updates and choose whether to apply
them.

Thanks,
"Will be GettingByOK again if I can get help to solve this"

You could try SafeXP. That was how I disabled Windows update.

1. To see installed updates, click Windows Update. At site click Update
History.
2. Question 2 I have no answer for, I don't use Norton.
3. To verify Auto Update settings, boot in Safe mode with Admin rights and
check settings. To turn off auto updates, click 'Turn off auto updates'
button. Set system for manual updates.
4. At Windows Update site click Custom. All available updates will
displayed, and you can pick what to install.

Nevermind, DandyDon,

Thanks again. I'll try your Safe mode boot recommendation. Already use
Custom for all my updates, appreciate the validation.
