I installed SP2. Now, whenever I start Outlook Express, I see the Windows
Messenger icon in the tray. I can't close it.

According to Add/Remove programs, the little piece of s--t isn't even
installed! What gives?

1) Double-click messenger icon;
Tools, Options;
General tab;
Un-check 'Automatically Run Messenger when I log into windows'.
OK.

2) R-click messenger icon;
Exit.

3) Start OE.
Tools, Options.
General Tab,
Un-check 'Automaticaly log on to windows messenger'.

4) R-click messenger icon if it re-appeared.
Exit.

There's no General tab. Only Personal, Phone, Preferences, Privacy and
Connection. That option isn't on any of those tabs.

Sorry, different mesenger version.
It's on the Preferences tab.

Un-check ' RunWindows Messenger when Windows starts'.

It already is unchecked, but WM still runs when I open OE.

Edward,

Do you have Norton AntiVirus? If you use Windows Messenger protection under
Instant Messenger options, NAV forces WM to start and won't let you close it.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

No, I use AntiVir from free-av.com. It's very basic.

Oh well - that was a long shot. Those with NAV and WM know what is though.

Well, I got rid of the piece of crap via the direct route. I went to Program
Files folder and renamed the Messenger folder (which shouldn't even be there
since I unchecked Messenger in Add/Remove Windows Components--what a crock of
sh*t. Thanks, Mocrosoft.)

Anyway, now that OE can't find Messenger, it doesn't open. Doesn't even give
an error message. Woohoo!
