Uninstall NAV 2004, return it to Symantec for a refund (if it has been
less than 30 days since you purchased it), and instead download and
install either:

AVG www.grisoft.com

AVAST www.avast.com

Both free and will update automatically.

Re-boot two or three time to get pre-fetch working.
Give it a week to tune the NTFS.

The only thing the is new is that it is loading more
programs at start up.
If you have dsl or cable, anf the FW,
why trun it off untill you need too?

What is your cluster size?

The problem is NOT with Norton AV. Despite what "CS" says, Norton will not
slow down a properly configured installation of Windows. "CS" obviously had
issues at one time with Norton, and now thinks that because he could not
maintain his machine properly that he can blame Norton. I have 4 computers
all running Norton Internet Security Pro, Norton AntiSpam, and Norton
Password manager, and all are functioning normally. The only time that
Norton AV will cause a delay is when you open a .exe to install it...NAV
will scan it for viruses before the installer will open.

I have Norton installed on my system (actually, it is installed on all four
of my systems), and it does not slow it (them) down. Symantec's Customer
Support is among the best...give them a try and see what they say. As far
as AVG, It missed two viruses on one of my computers that was caught when I
later installed Norton AV 2004 Pro. I cannot speak to how good Avast is,
but I would still recommend Norton above anything else on the market, free
or otherwise.
