SP2 and Enabling McAffee Firewall

W

W. Watson

Cute. I installed SP2 yesterday and noted during that install that I did not want
(supposedly the MS firewall turned on). Well, according to the Security Center, it
looks like it's not; however, McAffee is turned off. I want McAffee back in
operation. How do I turn it on. Win XP Pro refused my attempt.

What do you mean, XP refused your attempt? Is the version of McAfee you're
using compatible with SP2? Have you tried starting the McAfee FW through
McAfee? Have you told the SP2 Security Center that you have a third-party
firewall and will monitor it yourself?

Using XP Pro.

I went to the McAfee dialog and pressed Start Firewall. It wouldn't start. It tried
but came back with an error message--McAfee firewal error attempt to start firewall.
On the Security Center dialog, there are three choices: Internet Options, Windows
Firewall, and Automatic Updates. Choosing Firewall, I have two options: On and Off.
I've selected Off. I don't see a selection for third-party firewalls.

I say again: Is the version of McAfee you're using compatible with SP2? Have
you checked McAfee's website for an update? In the Security Center screen,
do you see no options along the leftmost side (I'm on a 2K computer at the
moment, so I can't look for myself).

I see Resources on the left. There are choices there, but they don't look to helpful.
I found McAfee's support web page and will take this up with them.

I just love it when MS takes away the firewall ability like that. Great security
upgrade this is. My computer has now been exposed for 24 hours. Cute.

You can turn on the XP firewall until you get your McAfee issues sorted out.
MS didn't take anything away. If this is a case where your McAfee needs an
update in order to be compatible with SP2, it's *your* responsibility to
make sure that it gets done.
