ASR Backup for Registry for XP Pro? Just a Floppy Please!

W

I'd like to save my registry in the event I screw it up when I change it. The ASR
facility supposedly will do this, but it seems like it wants to save everything in
sight. I've tinkered with the file selection options, but it seems to want to do at
least some minimal set of file back ups. Can't I just cut to the chase and produce a
floppy?

Forget the floppy, you will not be able to backup an XP registry this way.
Take a look at the following website for a free registry backup utility that
is highly recommended.

What happened to the concept of a floppy ERD? What if I somehow mishandle my system
and need to recover because I can't boot up? Isn't there some bootable floppy for
this purpose?

Is ASR capable of producing it?

You can use the ASR Wizard to create a recovery floppy, but this floppy will
only contain the hard-disk configuration information such as disk
signatures, the partition table, and volume data. It doesn't contain any
user information. If you run the ASR restore operation later from the XP
installation CD, this will allow you to use the floppy and access the back
up files on the hard drive or other media that were created by the ASR
Wizard.

See this link for more detailed information.

The XP CD itself serves that purpose, and can be booted to take the
immediate R - recovery - option as well as Setup. See the topic
"Recovery Console Commands" in Help and Support.
See http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;307545 for 'in extremis'
damage to registry, but before that attempt a boot to the F8 Menu and
Safe Mode - Command Prompt
where give
C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
to launch System Restore
