SP1A will not install/many programs crash etc

well im just trying to install SP1a - it says atapi.sys is in use - ive
checked its not, ive even uninstalled all cd/dvd related programs.

also, when i try and run some programs my pc just resets and gives me a
message related to update.exe as a service, even when it has nothing to
do with it!

also, some applications will not install as they say i do not have
admin rights - even when this is the only account on the pc.

any advice would be appreciated

start>run>(type) sfc / scannow (have winxp cd inserted)
start>run>(type) control userpasswords2 (make sure you have adminrights on
all accounts.)

It is not advisable to have "all" accounts set to have administrator rights ! Only have administrator rights for those users that need it. Not everyone.
But, yes, the logged in "user" has to have administrator rights to run a service pack update or a regular Windows Update.

You should download and install SP2 in lieu of SP1:

"Copy Error: Setup cannot copy the file Atapi.sys" error message when you try
to install Windows XP Service Pack 2
