SP1 will not install...

I have a brand new pc. New Soyo SY-800 board, new AMD 1800 Duron
processor. New CDRW. New case. I'm on my third attempt to get XP
installed and working correctly. Every time it has been something
different. The first two time it seemed everything installed perfectly
but not everything worked. The third time with the same PC, CD, and
same everything else, as the files were copied to the hard drive it
kept saying there were files it could not find. After telling it to
retry several times it goes on as though it found them. Now everything
seems to work perfectly except Windows Update locks up the computer and
SP1 will not install. SP1 installed yesterday just fine. Now it says
there is a corrupt file. I drove 20 miles to borrow another copy on a
CD to try again. Same thing. I tried to install SP1 via the "express
install" download. After over four hours I still had three plus hours
left to get it all downloaded on dial up. Even then I don't know if
it would have installed anyway. After each attempt to install XP I
did zero out the hard drive and reformat it.
Do I start over again or is there another way to find out what is
wrong with this install?

I have only installed XP on about 20 computers but I don't know if
it ever installed or does things the same way twice. The other day
I was going to do an XP repair. I passed up the choice to do the
repair by the console as usual. Only this time instead of saying there
was already a copy of windows do you want to repair it?, It said, Do
you want to upgrade it?
I will say once it is working correctly it seems pretty much crash
proof from what I've seen.

I got it fixed on my own. I did a Windows XP repair from the install
program and now Windows update works and SP1 installed the first try.
