What does My Computer report? Have you been to Windows Update recently?

If you have Service Pack 1 installed it will say so.
(also true if you have the beta of SP2)
Your result indicates you do not have either installed. You should
immediately install Sp and also a lot of critical updates.
go to Windows Update.

You do not have any SP service pack installed.. until SP2 is released in
full form, just install SP1a for now, and all of the critical updates that
installation of SP1a allows..

That sounds like you have never been to Window Update if SP 1 is not
listed.

Follow step 1 on this link to install SP 1:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm
Reboot
Follow #20 on the same link to install Windows XP Rollup one.
Reboot
Then go to Windows Update (Start/All Programs/Windows Update)
Install all Critical Updates no more than 3 at a time.
Reboot between each set of 3.

Once you are finished it is very important to regularly check for
updates, weekly is OK.
Or
Set for Automatic Updates:
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click "Automatic Updates" tab.
Check as desired.
