SP1 final release

Anyone know when the final release for Vista SP1 will be available? All of
the dates I've heard have come and gone, and MS downloads says nothing other
than 'coming soon'. Can't find any recent posts concerning this.
Thanks.....

What do you mean by "final release"? SP1 was released to the general
community more than a week ago and is nicely installed on my machine, Most
people have it by now I believe.

I have my Vista laptop set to notify me of updates.....in fact today there
was one update only, and it was Defender definitions.
So there's nothing from Windows update telling me SP1 is available as an
update.

........and why wouldn't it be listed at MS Downloads? it's still saying
'coming soon'.

This means that you probably have some device or driver on your machine that
is known to have problems with SP1. SP1 will not be offered if Windows
Update thinks there will be problems after it is installed.

I suggest you update your device drivers to the latest versions and see if
it is offered then. Failing that you could download the service pack from
the Microsoft web site and install it manually if you are game.

So, were you waiting for Windows update as well. I'm still waiting. I
wrote to one of the Toshiba forum members and he informed me Toshiba was not
offering support for SP1 yet, so I might want to wait. Of course in my
situation, my warranty is almost expired (if not already expired) so, I
wouldn't receive free support anyway.

I downloaded through windows update once I had all my updates current
about a week ago. Working great on my Toshiba laptop. It wouldn't show
up until all but the optional udates were done.

Then I guess they aren't that "optional".

Cheers.

My Sony laptop downloaded from WU but, no matter what I tried, it wasn't
offered for my Sony XL302 media centre.
Got fed-up with waiting for update, so downloaded and installed the
stand-alone pack.
Absolutely hitch free installation.
On the laptop it shows on the update list as an installed update but not on
the media centre (although correct version shows.)
On both machines I gained bizarre amounts of HDD space - 20gb on the media
centre. No idea why.
Transferring files between the two is noticeably much quicker.

I think if you have tweaked your Windows Services from the default
settings
(i.e. disabled some) it may cause Windows Update to not offer you SP1.

This was the case for me. After setting my Windows Services back to the
defaults and getting the consequent Windows Defender update, I was
offered SP1 the next time I ran Windows Update.
