I have been using XP SP2 for about two weeks. Last night, a small shield
showed up on my toolbar saying updates were ready to be installed. I
shutdown my computer and a message came up (on the blue screen during
shutdown) that updates were being installed. This morning the same screen is
there saying updates are being installed? I assume the computer is locked
up. It says not to power it down or reboot until the process is finished?
What should I do?

There have been a few critical updates in the last two days or so, that's
them probably. No, you shouldn't power off until they''re finished.
Go to Start/Control Center "Windows Update" on the left and see what's
showing in history.

After you have this sorted out I suggest you shut down automatic updates and
just do update notification or better still make it a point to visit the XP
update site once a week to look for XP updates. You really need to get to know
your computer better.
