SP 1 vs SP1a

I installed SP 1 on both of my machines shortly after it came out.
Later I bought another copy of XP Home with SP1 included and installed
it on another machine. Since then I have seen many references to SP
1a. As I understand it, I do not need to install SP1a if SP1 is
installed.

The question is a simple one. Is my understanding correct and just how
does SP1 differ from SP1a?

Thank you very much.

Thank you and Nicholas very much. I feel good about the whole thing
now. I tried to find such an explanation on the Microsoft sites but
must have overlooked it.

Hello!
XP SP1a is without JAVA, i.e. Java Virtual Machine. This is
the one and only difference between XP SP1 and XP SP 1a.

SP1 includes the 'Microsoft Virtual Machine' engine for Java: in SP1a
that is omitted under a Court order in the dispute with Sun. that is
the only difference
