sound

There is no sound from my system, neither through my internal realtek
speakers, nor from my external Logitech speakers. When I try to play a music
cd, I get a message with a red cross at the top "Windows cannot access the
specified device, you might not have the appropriate permission to access
this item".

What does Control Panel > Device Manager show for your audio adapter (under
Sound, video and game controllers) A yellow exclamation point? Is there a red X
on the Speaker icon of the Taskbar (extreme lower right corner of your screen)?

If so then you need to install proper audio adapter drivers. If not, then right
click on the speaker icon in the Notification Area, select Playback Devices,
right click on the window and select both Show Disabled Devices and Show
Disconnected Devices, if your Speakers are disabled, enable them and set them as
Default, if not just set them as Default and use the Configure and Properties
buttons to set them up.

There is no yellow exclammation point under the sound controller, nor is
there a red x on the speaker icon. There were no disabled or disconnected
devices and the sound still does not work after configurin them as default.
Could the problem be associated with an incompatible program on my system, or
could it be a defective sound card? I have tried everything, uninstalled the
webcam which is supposedly the latest logitech and vista compatible,
uninstalled skype, the only program left to uninstall is Word Perfect 12
which caused no problem a few days ago with the sound. Any more ideas how to
solve my problem?

When you are in Playback Devices with Speakers highlighted, did you use the
configure and properties buttons to set up playback? Are you sure you do not
have your speakers muted? I do not think that anything (except Skype) would
affect your sound. What soundcard? Have you tried to reinstall soundcard
drivers? As a last resort, you could try a System Restore to a point before you
lost sound. Also, the Logitech software program has a routine to set up and
test your speakers. Have you tried that?
