All of a sudden while someone else was using my computer and said that they
didn't do anything to it, I lost some system sounds. Actions like closing
an unsaved file in Word and clearing the recycle bin no longer make a sound.
The volume control now makes the internal case speaker beep. I can go into
the
Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds tab and play every
single sound associated with an event and the sounds work fine there.
Programs like Clipmate (that make entries in the Sounds tab) still make
their sounds, and non-Windows programs (NoteTab Pro) will audibly sound the
"Question" sound when closing without saving. Basically, it looks like
Windows/Microsoft programs (except for IE 6, which still plays the click
sound when clicking on a link and the "asterisk" sound when downloading is
complete) will no longer use system sounds, but all other programs will use
them perfectly. MP3s, MIDIs and Wav file play just fine (so I don't think
it's the driver, which I reinstalled anyway to get the same results.) I
also deleted all my sound schemes and remade one to use, still the same
problem. I've looked in the registry and sounds schemes have a 0 and a
box-character appended to them, for example, a scheme named "Light" would be
"Light0#" where # is the box character. Have you heard of this before and
can you help?
Thanks!
