sound volume shortcut disappeared from tray?

Somehow the speaker icon that appears in the status bar of my notebook next
to the clock disappeared. How can I bring it back?

I went to the control panel and created a shortcut for the speaker from
there, but it is not the same thing and when I open the shortcut and raise
the volume, as soon as i close the window my computer is muted and i have to
open the shortcut and unmute it again. so for some reason my computer is
muted by default.
 
Go to Sounds and Audio in CONTROL PANEL.. click on the sounds tab.. check
the box that places an icon in the system tray..
