Require quick volume mute

I am running WinXP Pro. My speakers are in an inaccessible place and
I would like to mute my PC when I am working late at night.

I am looking for advice on two questions.

---

QUESTION ONE

When I was running Win98 I could click the speaker icon in the System
Tray. Then a box approximately one inch wide and 2 inches high would
pop up above the s[eaker icon. This box allowed me to mute the
speaker volume or adjust it.

On the other hand, in WinXP I still have a speaker icon in the System
Tray but I must then select an option from the short pop-up menu and
then do the mute from there.

Is there something similar to the Win98 pop-up window available for
XP?

Even better, is there a way of having a SHORTCUT KEY assigned to
mute/unmute?

---

QUESTION TWO

Is there a way to mute the sound XP makes when it starts up and shuts
down?

The Windows Volume control is identical to 98. Maybe your soundcard is providing the volume control.

You can map keys to the "exec mute" to toggle sounds on and off, and "exec
volumeall" to set a specific volume level.

Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices
Sounds tab
Set sounds for "Exit Windows" and "Start Windows" to empty (None).

The best and easiest way to do this is to purchase a
Microsoft Internet Keyboard. Has mute and volume right at
the top of the keyboard. Instantaneous response!

If you "righ-click" you get the pop-up with the options you need to select
from. If you "left-click" you get the volume control slider and mute
option, as always.
