Sound/Speaker Problems

My speakers, which came along with the computer, have recently started making
a low humming noise. I can no longer play any music from any source, nor does
my computer make any noise. I've checked and re-checked the connection
between the computer and speakers, and the green light does show that there
is power to the speakers. However, all I get from the speakers is a low
humming noise. The volume control knob does not increase or decrease the
sound. I've tried making sure the device is working properly but our
computer system says everything is working properly. What do you think is
wrong and how should I go about fixing it? I'm about ready to buy some new
speakers, but will that fix the problem.
