Sound recording software

I have had good luck with embedding voice narration in my Powerpoint
presentations. However, I'm not really thrilled with the quality of the
recordings (I use sound recorder software included with the purchase of the
computer). Does anyone have any suggestions on either voice recording
software or software to clean up a recording with static? I'm looking for
something under $100 if possible.

Audacity is a good little (free) sound editor/recorder.

Also, I used to use Sound Forge Audio Studio back when Sonic Foundry still
owned it. It was a very nice program -- did everything I needed. (I don't
use half the stuff Sound Forge has available in it!) Sony finally came out
with a new version. I haven't tried it, but I'd bet it's pretty good.
