sound problems

I have a Dell laptop and my sound won't work from the built in speakers. It
works when I plug in earphones or my other speakers, but once I unplug them,
no sound comes out of the computer. I've ran the troubleshooter with no luck.
Any ideas? Thank you!

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Open the control panel and under sounds and audio, the audio tab, make sure
the correct device is listed for playback. (And make sure nothing is muted
or the likes.)

OK, this is a shot in the dark and I'm not trying to insult your
intelligence but my wife made this mistake - is there a thumbwheel for
volume control that is perhaps turned down?

Yeah, I have an Inspiron 700 and it doesn't have the volume control wheel on
it. And no offense taken :) Nothing is muted and it's the right device
listed. The funny thing is that I can plug in my speakers and it woirks fine,
but as soon as I unplug them from the audio jack, no sound comes out of the
computer.

While this problem is not common it happens when there is a
mechanical fault with the outlet where you plug in your
external speakers. Within the outlet is a small switch which
when a plug is inserted, turns off (opens) the connection to
the internal speakers. When you remove the plug from the
jack (outlet,) this switch is supposed to close to permit
the internal speakers to work. If the switch gets hung up
or breaks no signal can go to the internal speakers. If the
unit is under warranty, it is time to return to Dell. If
not under warranty, any decent repair shop should be able to
replace the outlet/switch combination but it probably will
require dismantling of the laptop and soldering on the
motherboard. It will also probably be fairly expensive.
Your choice, to either have repaired or to leave as is and
use external speakers. Small, non-powered ones can be had
for little money. Battery/shore powered ones are slightly
more.
