Sound problems- mike and headphones

I've been unable to have audio component working in msn messenger. I can
hear incoming voice, but can't be heard.
I went into "sounds and audio devices" in control panel to test the
microphone and found that there was no sound input.

So I bought a new set, Altec Lansing AHS.320.
I've plugged in according to the color codes indicated. Pink into pink
microphone connector does not work. Computer does not detect any input.
Green into green headphone connector gives sound in headphones, but it means
disconnecting the computer's loudspeakers.
I tested this with a music file.

There are only 3 connectors, green, blue and pink.

When I try to make changes in "sounds and audio devices" or "speech", there
is an error "The requested task cannot be carried out because the necessary
engine could not be crated. Please select a different engine and/or
different device."

The audio default device is "C-Media wave device".

I have a video conference coming up and would appreciate any help.

Did you "select" the mic in the recording properties of the mixer, and
also check it's slider adjustment?
