Sound problem??

R

Rich

In an attempt to clean my HD I have managed to screw up my sound. Not sure
how to fix it.
At first OS couldn't see my CD drive, but now it can. However, I have lost
most, but not all sounds? I get music on boot, on playying cd's etc. but NOT
normal Win sounds. No beeps, dings, etc.
So, not my sound card or speakers.
Any thoughts?
In simple terms please, I am not a win techie....
Thanks.

Well, I tried doing the "In-Place Upgrade" and it didn't solve the problem -
BUT I made a new ERD w/ reisgtry just before and used that during "up-grade".
Would it have helped if I used an older ERD or one with out the registry?

What are the details of the "cleaning" that was done? Have you checked the
settings in Control Panel|Sounds ? What happens if you logon as a new user?
Control Panel|Users and Passwords to create a new account.

"Cleaning" was just going to add/remove programs and deleting 6 or so
programs. Mainly old things. such as software for cell phones that I don't
have anymore. drivers for an old Zip drive that has died, etc.

"Logon" as a new user..... I went to Users and passwords and created a new
user, but can't seem to log on as such?? I never get a choice. It
automatically goes to "normal" logon????
Thanks, Rich

You never did say about the Control Panel|Sounds applet. Are the settings
correct? Can you manually trigger a sound and what is the result. Also check
the event logs for clues. It doesn't sound like you performed the in-place
upgrade so I guess I try that. It sounds like you did a manual registry
restore instead.

I don't know what is going on. I answered this yesterday, but nothing has
shown up???

Control Panel/ Sound: Everything looks normal to my eyes ?? Settings seem
the same as before and list my sound card (onboard). But again I am not very
technical!

Maunally trigger: I "think" that the trigger is the right arrow between file
& Browse. Then the answer is No. I hear nothing.

Event logs: I don't see anything that tells me something has been changed?
The closest thing is a note about the DVD sound (which I did delte accidently
a day after I lost all sound) I'll post this "code" at the end of the body of
this reply.

Inplace upgrade: I did what that MS "paper" said and it It didn't respond
exactly like I expected, but close, so I think that I did do this inplace
upgrade??

What I cc'd from event log:

I think you're left with taking it to someone or possibly a clean install
but still may have the problem if it is hardware failure.

Well, thanks for trying. I doubt that it is a hardware failure because I hear
sound perfectly during boot, listening to CD's, etc. Just not windows things
like WMF playback and the various "noises" that tell you you made a mistake.
I can't lose this for a week or so until some shop can get around to working
on it, so I guess it is a reinstall. Any idea's on what I should copy to not
completely lose all of my settings/ legacy drivers / etc. ??
Thanks, Rich

I'd get the mobo chipset, any other relevant drivers drivers from the
manufacturer's web site, and at least the first three below so you'll have
them handy when the installation is complete. You can't connect bare Windows
2000 to the internet else you'll have many infections within minutes.

My standard boilerplate on clean install;

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very
important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive
controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later
you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver
for your drive controller in drive "A")

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP4 and these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

Before I launch into a complete re-install, I have just remembered that I
have everything backed up to tape. Do you know what files are involved with
this issue? If so I can at least try to restore/replace just those files
first.
??????
Thanks, Rich
