sound on computer

I hope someone may have a clue as to what could cause this.
I set up my computer for my friend. Everything worked
great. At start of windows sound played, and exit windows
sound played. Now nothing. We reset sounds in the control
panel. The sounds preview, CD plays and can be heard. Even
the recycle bin sound works, but not start and exit windows.
Any clues? Help? Please?

Check if there are sounds assigned to those events:
[Start]
Settings
Control Panel
Sounds and Multimedia
Sound Events section
Check "Exit Windows" and "Start Windows"

Make sure the sound files exist:
C:\WINNT\Media\*.wav
-or-
C:\WINDOWS\Media\*.wav
