Right after I installed XP, maybe after a couple of
bootups, my sound just disappeared out of nowhere. When I
go to sounds in the Control Panel and click on any of the
default sounds for the different functions of the
computer, I get this message,........
"Windows cannot play the %SystemRoot%\media\WindowsXP
_____.wav file. The file may be damaged or may use an
unrecognized compression format. To resolve this problem,
replace the file or use Add/Remove Programs in Control
panel to install Audio Compression."

I'm not finding anything remotely close to audio
compression in A/R Programs or in the components window to
the left. Could someone point me in right direction so
I can get this mess resolved. XP just isn't XP w/o the
sound.

THANX N ADVANCE Wayne B.

You may want to do a repair via the System File Checker.

"The following assumes you have an actual XP CD as opposed to a restore CD
or restore partition supplied by your PC manufacturer.

Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter. Note, there
is a space between sfc and the forward slash. You will be asked for your XP
CD. Be aware, upon inserting the CD the XP setup screen may appear, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, rather it is being invoked by autorun. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue."
