sound intermits

I have XP Home. It has worked well for over a year. A
few months ago the sound started going off for a few days
and and then coming on for a week or so. It is off now.
Speakers are connected and powered on. When I go
to "Sounds and Audio Device Properties" is say "No audio
device". I never change any of this; it seems to happen
on its own. Has anyone seen this before or know how to
correct it?
