Have you tried system restore. I recently downloaded a
critical patch from win-update. After that I had no sound
on anything. (strange) but true. I called Microsoft about
it. He walked me through system restore which is a very
simple step. WA- LA I had sound again. What system
restore does is delete last thing or /program downloaded
on your computer restores it back to the date anything
was last downloaded or installed. It will show you what
and date of downloaded/installed stuff. You may have to
re-install any such program after doing system restore.
Go to programs,accessories,system tools,system restore.
Microsoft tech couldn't figure out how this download had
anything to do with my sound unless it had something to
do with my Norton AV in combination with this download.
Bottom line. I have had no more sound problem. I have
downloaded this same patch plus another without a
problem. Good Luck. ps I too have a gateway desk top and
win-xp HE.
