no system sound

I upgraded from windows me to xp pro, and now I have no
system sound. The only programs that give any sound are
windows media player, and my tv tuner card. I have
downloaded and installed new drivers and software for my
sound card, and checked for any device conflicts.
Suggestions?
soundblaster live! value 16bit sound card, dell system,
windows xp, winfast tv 2000 xp deluxe sound card and modem
(disabled) are only other pci cards.

i also am having problems with sounds.when I close any

programs where I would like to hear a sound. anyone with a
suggestion on what I can do to get sounds? need help
