sound gone awol...

reinstalled xp pro on laptop - says "no audio device" under sound properties
but under device manager "ess allegro pci audio" says driver is enabled but
not started - I've ticked "enable" but still no sound after restarting.

can you advise please?

I would suggest you check with the company that made the sound card or
the computer for an updated sound card driver for XP . I bet you'll
find they have an XP version for the sound card.
 
You've reinstalled XP, but did you reinstall the driver(s) for the
sound card?

Also, embedded somewhere within control panel > Sound > Audio(?) is a
pulldown where you can specify the preferred sound device to be used.
See what you have specified there and correct it if it's wrong.
 
I had a very similar problem. Try this: Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Services, Windows Audio, Set it to Automatic on
Start-UP. Let me know if it works!
