Sound file keeps finishing early on first run, ok therafter

I have a PowerPoint slideshow(7Mb) with a sound file(392kb) that plays during
the presentation.

The sound file finishes about 3 seconds before it should when I first launch
Powerpoint and the show, but is perfect after each run afterwards. If I close
Powerpoint and start the show again the sound finishes early again, but ok on
all the following runs.

I've tried different PCs and even built a fresh windows install with office
on just in case its interference from another application, still no fix.

I've tried embedding the sound file in the Powerpoint slideshow and that
didn't work either.

Can anyone please help with this? I'm going nuts!

Thanks
Nigel

I have a bit more information now if it helps get an idea.

The sound file starts at the extact same point in the powerpoint
presenatation and ends exactly 45 seconds after.....this is the case always.

What I have noticed is that the beginning of each slide stalls just as it
loads the first image (there are four per slide) when first run....this is
about a second per slide (13 slides).

The images must be cached when run a second, third, fourth (and so on) time.

Could this be a problem with images?

Thanks
N
